Div A Finals wrap-up
Division A got
underway with a quick, tough and at
times spiteful elimination clash between
Los Gaurens and Taylors. The ref did
a great job to keep control as each
team showed they were desperate to make
it through to the next round. Los Gaurens
did a great job shutting down the Taylors
usually brilliant outside game, but
were unable to fully exploit their big
height and weight advantage on the inside
thanks to some smart defence from Taylors.
Los Gaurens held a slight lead most
of the game, but it wasn’t until
the Taylors had one of their players
fouled off near the end of the game
that the result was decided, 34-28 Los
Guarens way, Taylors bowing out in the
first round.
On
the other court undefeated ladder leaders
3hrillers dominated from the outset
against second placed Super Action,
putting on a show with a string of jumpshots,
spin moves and strong inside play to
leave Super Action chasing all game.
In the end Super Action did well to
only go down 60-29 against a near flawless
display from the 3hrillers.
Next
came the preliminary final with Super
Action facing off with Los Guarens. This
proved to be one of the most intense
and hard fought games of the day.
Just before halftime the match the
score was just 4-1 Los Guarens way,
showing just how tough it was. The
game stayed low scoring until the
last five minutes, and Los Guarens
looked in control as Super Action
struggled to find a way to score.
Until in stepped the Super Action
captain, who hit a string of unstoppable
turn around fade away jump shots and
made some crucial stops to pull his
side back on terms. The last minute
was a scramble, Los Guarens getting
front first and then making a stop
before turning the ball over and watching
as the Super Action captain made two
more tough pressure shots to give
them a two point lead with just seconds
left. Los Guarens had one final chance
at the line to tie the game, but missed
both the foul shots and Super Action
snuck away with a 20-18 win and the
right to a rematch with the 3hrillers.
Los Guarens finishing up a fantastic
season none the less.
The
first match up between 3hrillers and
Super Action had resulted in the biggest
thrashing of the day, and with Super
Action having already played two tough
games and the 3hrillers fresh it looked
another thumping was on the cards.
It wasn’t to be though, Super
Action playing smart ball after a
slow start to frustrate the 3hrillers
and stay in touch the whole game.
Several times 3hrillers looked like
they would break away with the game,
but Super Action kept doing enough
at the right times to keep close.
But even without dominating the 3hrillers
stayed in control most of the way,
and some good individual plays, including
a couple of big shots from A division
MVP Steven Tabone proved the difference,
3hrillers becoming rightful A division
champions after a 39-29 win.
